When shopping for premium products—whether it's a sleek coffee maker, a high-quality insulated flask, stylish furniture, or the latest consumer electronics—you may have noticed a small red circle displayed on the packaging.

This is the **Red Dot Design Award**, one of the world's most prestigious design recognitions. For consumers, it often signals quality and innovation. For designers and brands, earning the Red Dot is a remarkable achievement and an international mark of excellence.

A Story That Began in Germany in 1954

The origins of the Red Dot Design Award date back to **July 30, 1954**, during Germany's post-war reconstruction.

Professor **Karl Hundhausen**, head of Public Relations and Advertising at the Krupp Company, helped establish the **Verein Industrieform (Industrial Design Association)**. Its mission was to modernize German consumer products, improve their international competitiveness, and rebuild the country's industrial reputation through outstanding design.

What started as an initiative to encourage better product design would eventually evolve into one of the most respected design awards in the world.

The First Design Competition

In 1955, the association organized its first annual design competition.

Later that year, the **Permanent Exhibition of Well-Designed Industrial Products** opened at **Villa Hügel** in Essen, Germany. The exhibition showcased products that combined functionality, innovation, and aesthetic appeal, quickly becoming an influential benchmark for both manufacturers and consumers.

Its success attracted international attention and helped establish Germany as a global leader in industrial design.

From a Black-and-Orange Logo to the Famous Red Dot

The organization's early visual identity was created by renowned designer **Otl Aicher**, featuring black and orange circular elements.

A major transformation came in **1991**, when **Professor Dr. Peter Zec** became the managing partner of the organization. He introduced the iconic **red dot** identity, and in **1992** it was officially presented as the symbol of the award.

Today, that simple red circle is recognized around the world as a mark of outstanding design quality.

A Global Competition for Exceptional Design

The Red Dot Award currently recognizes excellence in three major categories:

  • Product Design

  • Communication Design
