The Tomorrow War 2 Is Coming — But Where Did the White Spikes Really Come From?

In The Tomorrow War, humanity's greatest enemy seems obvious.
The White Spikes, Fast, violent and almost impossible to kill, these terrifying creatures swarm across the Earth in the future, pushing humanity toward extinction.
But by the end of the movie, we discover something much more disturbing.
The White Spikes didn't arrive in the future, They had been here all along, Buried beneath the ice, and even more importantl--They may never have been the real enemy.
With The Tomorrow War 2 still in development, one question could become far more important than another battle between humans and monsters: Who created the White Spikes—and why were they being transported across space? To understand where the sequel could go, we first have to return to the war that started everything.
The War Begins in the Future
The story begins in the present day with Dan Forester, played by Chris Pratt, Dan is a former Green Beret who now works as a biology teacher. He has a wife, Emmy, and a young daughter named Muri.
Then something impossible happens...During a televised football match, soldiers suddenly appear through a portal.
They're not aliens, They're humans, And they've come from the year 2051, Their message is terrifying: Humanity is losing a war against an alien species, Within decades, almost everyone on Earth will be dead.
The future needs soldiers, So governments around the world begin sending people from the present into the future to fight, Eventually, Dan is drafted.
Welcome to 2051
Dan and a group of civilians are transported approximately 30 years into the future, But almost immediately, the mission goes wrong, They arrive above a devastated Miami instead of safely reaching their intended location, Many die within seconds.
Those who survive quickly discover what humanity is fighting---The White Spikes.
These creatures are horrifyingly efficient predators, They're fast, They can climb, They attack in groups, Their tails can fire deadly spikes, And the females are particularly difficult to kill.
Human civilization has almost completely collapsed, But Dan is about to discover something even more shocking than the aliens.
Dan Meets His Daughter — 30 Years Later
The military commander leading humanity's scientific effort is Colonel Muri Forester, Dan's daughter.
The little girl he left behind in the present is now an adult scientist and military officer, But their reunion isn't a happy one.
Future Muri reveals something Dan doesn't know yet, In the years after Dan returns home, his life will fall apart, His marriage will fail, He will become increasingly distant from his family and eventually, Dan will die in a car accident while Muri is still young.
Suddenly, the movie isn't just about saving humanity, It's about a father being shown the consequences of a future he hasn't lived yet, And Muri gives him one last chance to change it.
The Female White Spike
Muri has been searching for a biological weakness in the White Spikes, Together, she and Dan capture a female specimen and begin developing a toxin capable of killing it, Eventually, they succeed.
But they're running out of time, The White Spikes overwhelm humanity's final defenses, Muri knows her future can no longer be saved, So she gives Dan the toxin and sends him back to the present.
Her hope is simple: Don't win the war in 2051, Prevent it from ever happening, Dan returns home, And then comes the movie's biggest revelation.
The White Spikes Didn't Arrive in 2048
Everyone had assumed the creatures appeared sometime in the future, But Dan begins asking a much smarter question: What if they were already here?
Clues eventually point toward northern Russia, Deep beneath the frozen landscape, Dan and his team discover something enormous buried under the ice.
An alien spacecraft, And it has apparently been there for a very long time, The implication changes everything, The White Spikes didn't recently fly to Earth, They arrived aboard a spacecraft that crashed here long before humanity knew they existed.
They remained frozen beneath the ice, Until rising temperatures eventually exposed them, The future alien invasion wasn't really an invasion at all, It was an awakening.
Then They Enter the Spaceship
This is where The Tomorrow War leaves us with its most interesting mystery, Inside the ship are alien pilots, But they look nothing like White Spikes, And the White Spikes aren't sitting in the cockpit.
They're stored inside the vessel, That leads Dan's team to a disturbing conclusion: The White Spikes were cargo.
More specifically, the movie strongly suggests they were being transported as some form of biological weapon, Dan and his team use Muri's toxin to destroy the dormant creatures.
Some awaken, resulting in one final battle, but eventually the spacecraft and most of the White Spikes are destroyed.
A surviving female is killed by Dan and his father James, The future war has apparently been prevented. Humanity is saved, End of story....Right?
Not quite.
Who Was Flying the Ship?
This is the question The Tomorrow War never answers, If the White Spikes were cargo, then somebody put them there, The dead aliens found inside the spacecraft appear to belong to another species entirely.
So perhaps the White Spikes weren't an advanced civilization invading planets, Perhaps they were weapons.
Imagine releasing a population of White Spikes onto an inhabited world, They reproduce rapidly, They hunt almost everything, They overwhelm conventional military forces.
They devastate entire populations, You wouldn't need to invade a planet with millions of soldiers.
You could simply release the creatures and wait, Which leads to an even bigger question:
What Were the White Spikes Originally Made For?
Were they engineered? Were they captured somewhere else? Were they bred specifically as weapons? Was the spacecraft carrying them toward Earth?
Or was Earth never the intended destination at all? Perhaps the ship simply crashed here by accident.
The first movie deliberately leaves those questions unanswered, And director Chris McKay has previously discussed the possibility of exploring exactly this part of the universe—the creatures' origins, how they were created or raised, how they may have been used, and the larger possibilities created by time travel.
That gives The Tomorrow War 2 a much bigger story than simply: More White Spikes attack Earth.
The Tomorrow War 2 Could Go Beyond Earth
This is where we have to separate confirmed information from speculation, There is currently no officially announced plot for The Tomorrow War 2.
But the first movie created several obvious questions a sequel could explore, The biggest is the civilization behind that crashed spacecraft.
If they created or controlled the White Spikes, are there more of these creatures elsewhere? Are there more ships?
Does that alien civilization still exist? And most importantly: Was Earth ever supposed to receive the White Spikes in the first place?
That could transform The Tomorrow War from a time-travel monster movie into a much larger science-fiction universe.
But There's Another Problem: Time Travel
The White Spikes aren't the only mystery, The first movie also introduced time travel without fully exploring its consequences, Dan travels into a future where humanity is almost extinct.
He meets his adult daughter, Then he returns to the present and changes the events that created that future.
So what happens to the future Muri experienced? Does that timeline simply disappear? Does another timeline continue to exist? Can the technology reconnect to it?
Could somebody else use the same technology? Director Chris McKay has specifically identified time travel and world-building as areas with more storytelling potential.
That means the sequel doesn't necessarily need another simple alien invasion, The consequences of changing history could become the story itself.
What We Actually Know About The Tomorrow War 2
The sequel has been discussed since shortly after the first movie became a streaming success in 2021, More importantly, screenwriter Zach Dean gave a significant update in 2025.
He confirmed that he had written a draft of The Tomorrow War 2 and said development of the story was continuing. Dean also suggested that the sequel would take familiar ideas in a different—and darker—direction while retaining the family themes important to the first film.
However, as of September 2026, the project is still listed as in development, There is currently: No official release date. No officially announced plot. And no official full trailer.
Current industry listings continue to show The Tomorrow War 2 as an Amazon MGM Studios and Skydance Media project with its release date listed as TBA.
So those impressive-looking The Tomorrow War 2 (2026) trailers and posters circulating online should not automatically be mistaken for official promotional material.
The Real Enemy May Still Be Out There
The ending of The Tomorrow War feels victorious, Dan destroys the creatures before they can emerge from the ice, He repairs his relationship with his father.
And most importantly, he returns home determined not to become the broken man his future daughter remembered, Humanity's terrible future has apparently been erased.
But there's one unsettling thought the movie leaves behind, The White Spikes didn't build that spaceship.
Someone else did, Someone transported them, Someone may have understood exactly what these creatures were capable of doing, Dan Forester may have prevented tomorrow's war.
But he never discovered who—or what—put the weapons on that ship, And somewhere beyond Earth, the answer may still be waiting.
Perhaps The Tomorrow War 2 won't really be about the return of the White Spikes.
Perhaps it will finally reveal the civilization that created the nightmare in the first place.
